So I moved into this apartment yesterday. Today, I noticed six baby cockroaches laying on their backs on the windowsill. Not dead, but dying. My guess is that they did some spraying before we moved in and that’s what was killing them, but why the windowsill? Why only babies?

Oh, also there was one in the sink. Dying but not dead. I’m gonna get some traps this evening, but I really hope this doesn’t mean we have an infestation.

if they sprayed then you should be good. I would just get some traps and clean them up as they show their nasty faces. Just keep food in a good spot and don’t give them a good place to live until they disappear. .

The babies couldn’t get out of the way fast enough.

Don’t worry, for everyone you see, there are thousands more waiting to take their place.

Honestly, if the place has roaches, you are NOT going to completely get rid of them. You’re going to have to re-spray every so often. Get a pro. And whatever it’s like now, the summer will be worse, based on my experience.

I think you’re right about them spraying before you moved in. Not sure why you’re only seeing babies though.

Scarily accurate.

If there are lots of trees nearby or touching the building, they’ll never be completely gone. Baits and spray will have to be deployed regularly.

Normally when places get sprayed, they spray all the possible points of entry, which includes the windowsill. Not sure why the roaches would be there though, unless they are coming in from outside. Be aggressive about getting them treated if you see more, and be very careful about leaving food out, it takes a lot to get rid of them once they are established.

When I was living in Houston (Roach Capital of the World™), I had a friend who kept his apartment spotless and still had roaches. It doesn’t matter how clean you keep your place, the neighbor is probably a pig and the building is infested. Sadly, it’s probably something you’re just going to have to get used to.

That said, there are traps, and natural remedies like borax that might help. You might also get a lizard as a pet and let him roam in the apartment. They love roaches, and you may never have to buy it any food. Just put some water out for it.

Call and write the landlord now; and just ask if they sprayed and if they will help with mitigation. It makes your life easier(if they are bad enough you want to move out or need more spraying in the future) if you can show they were there when you moved in.

Burn it. Burn it all! Only solution I can see. I hate bugs. I don’t know how people live in the South where bugs are a guaranteed part of every day life forever. The one upside of there not being any water here in Socal is that there tends to also be fewer bugs in most places.

Move out. If there are roaches in your apartment they are likely in the other apartments in the building. Unless your landlord tented the whole building, you will probably see them Come back as the get chased from the next apartment to be sprayed.

The only way for them to eliminate the roaches is to bomb & spray the whole building, every apartment, all at the same time. If you don’t, they just take refuge in the neighboring apartments until the poison dissipates.

Interesting story - I lived with my mom in university apartments while she went to school. There was a really bad roach infestation that they couldn’t seem to correct. My mom went to an open forum and asked the university president when they were going to get rid of the roaches in the university apartments. She told him about the problem and suggested that they spray the whole building at once. They did it two weeks later.

We never saw roaches in that apa rtment again.
